Boxing world mourns death of teenage boxer Vasilis Topalos

The boxing world mourns the death of Greek junior European champion boxer Basilis Topalos, who died at the age of 16.

Tributes flooded social media following the news that Greek junior European champion boxer Vasilis Topalos, 16, died earlier this week.

The young boxer was seriously injured during a sparring match in December.

Topalos was injured in a gym in Kallithea, a district of Athens and municipality of the South Athens Regional Unit, on Friday morning, December 16, 2022, according to reports from Greece.

After the death of Basilis Topalos, the Hellenic Boxing Federation announced a boxing tournament in his name.

A statement from the Hellenic Boxing Federation reads: You should send a letter of condolence to his family. Wreath in his memory.

“The funeral expenses of the deceased will be covered by the Greek Boxing Federation.

“To establish a permanent annual scholarship in his name and offer it to TEFAA students and be selected by the Hellenic Boxing Federation.

“To organize the Vasilios Topalos International Boxing Tournament.”

They also tributed in a social media post, saying, “Gone are our Golden Child, smiling Santa, born champion with a heart of pure gold.”

He added: “It is a sadness beyond words for the Greek boxing family…

“Words cannot express what we are feeling. We are all devastated.

“Santa, you left us too soon. We will always remember you with love and nostalgia.

“My condolences to his family and loved ones.

“Lighten the earth that covers you.

“You are forever in our hearts.”

England Boxing expressed their condolences via social media, writing:

“England Boxing is saddened to learn that Greek Junior European Champion boxer Vassilis Topalos has died at the age of 16 while visiting the Belvedere Boxing Club.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time 🙏”
