Young boxing prodigy Vassilis Topalos was expected to become a future professional world champion, but he died after being placed in intensive care due to a series of tragic circumstances.
At just 16 years old, the European Youth honoree Topalos suffered a devastating accident in mid-December.
As reported by Proto Thema, the Greek boxer was sparring at the Tavros Gym when he fell ill. The training session was quickly aborted and Topalos went back to his dressing room to try to calm himself down.

However, he fainted and hit his head on the floor, adding to the already suspected injuries to his skull.
Attendees called medical services and Topalos was then taken to Tsanios Hospital. Doctors fought hard to save Topalos and put the teenager in his ICU.
He remained there for over two weeks, but sadly died from his injuries.
Greece’s Deputy Sports Minister, Lefteris Avgenakis, has launched an investigation after issuing a solemn statement on the incident.
Avgenakis said: “Our sports community mourns the passing of the young boxing champion Vasily Topalos.
“Many question marks remain. However, we are confident that ongoing investigations will shed light on all aspects of the unclear circumstances of his fatal injury.”

They added: Words cannot express our sadness for the Hellenic Boxing family.

Gym trainer Nikos Yidakos asked Proto Thema for a direct explanation. He said Topalos was discovered by another young fighter, Arik Ragazashvili.
Lagazashvili informed the father and owner of the facility, who called the emergency services.
Sadly, despite surgery to remove the hematoma, Topalos could not be saved.
