Boxing giant Jerry Coetzee has died of lung cancer at the age of 67.

The former World Heavyweight Champion, known as “Boksburg Bomber”, became the first boxer from Africa to win the World Heavyweight Championship, clashing with fighters such as Frank Bruno.

News of his death was confirmed by Jerry’s manager, Thinus Strydom, on News 24 on Thursday (12.01.23) evening.

News24 added, “He died surrounded by his family after being diagnosed by a doctor about a week ago.”

One online tribute to Jerry said: The Boksburg bomber fell ill.

“Almost exactly 40 years after his epic win over Mike Dawkes to win the WBA Heavyweight Championship via 10-round KO, Jerry Coetzee has died at the age of 67.”

Jerry competed in 1974-1986, 1993 and 1997.

He finished his career with 40 fights, 33 wins, 6 losses and 1 draw, and recorded knockouts in 21 victories.

Jerry retained the WBA title from 1983 to 1984, and his notable knockout victories included matches against WBA World Heavyweight Champion Michael Dokes and former unified World Heavyweight Champion Leon Spinks, as well as future WBC titles. A draw with world heavyweight champion Pinklon Thomas was included.
