Bektemir Melikuziev has rediscovered his knockout method.
The 2016 Olympic silver medalist quickly handled San Diego’s Ulysses Sierra, scoring two knockdowns en route to a three-round knockout. Sierra said she was decked twice in her DAZN televised match at her YouTube theater in Inglewood, Calif. on Saturday night as she was stopped at 2:59 in round 3. rice field.
Melikdiev and his team claimed they were going to come full circle in this fight. That theory was put to the test in the season opener. Sierra suffered a bodily injury from his shot, but literally unhooked as Uzbekistan’s Melikdiev relaxed and San Diego native Sierra was able to survive the round.
Disaster threatened to strike in the second round. Melikdiev maintained control of his cruise until he cut just outside his right eye. The wound was determined to have been caused by a punch. That meant that if the fight was interrupted due to a cut, the Uzbek southpaw was in danger of losing to a technical knockout of him. It’s still not enough to give the combat a sense of urgency, but it never got to that point.
Sierra eventually folded in Round 3. A left hand to the body sent the fringe super-middleweight contender to the canvas early in the round, and Sierra, who was the last knockout victim in Edgar Berlanga’s resume, beat the count and ended up in the second half of the round. Even managed to land his 1-2 combination which was crisp. He immediately hit his body with his left hand, causing Sierra to cringe. Referee Thomas Taylor decided that he did not need to continue the match and immediately stopped the contest.
Melikdiev (11-1, 9 KOs) is on a four-game winning streak after losing to Gabriel Rosado in June 2021 by three-round knockout.
Headlining the show is a 12-round welterweight contest between local favorite Alexis Rocha (21-1-13 KOs) from nearby Santa Ana and Ghanaian George Ashee (33-5-1-25 KOs) .
