After a basketball game between Middletown High School and Hartford’s Weaver High School on Tuesday night, players, fans and adults quarreled on the court, leaving one with minor injuries and others in disgust. I embraced
“Sad. They were supposed to be role models for kids, and jumping in instead of trying to spread it probably wouldn’t have helped.
Tuesday’s game will be the second of the week and the first in New Haven on Monday.
“It’s about kids having a good time and playing games. It’s about staying out of trouble, not getting in trouble,” said Middletown’s Joe Salaphia.
In a statement, the Middletown District Administration and Middletown Police Department said they were “aware of the threat of retaliation rumors,” but that police “deemed the threat to be unfounded.”
As a result, Middletown has postponed all home athletic events to Wednesday.
Dr. Carissa Nehoff, Executive Director of the National Federation of High School Associations, said:
Dr. Niehoff, who headed the CIAC from 2010 to 2018, said such behavior had worsened recently, a surprise to her coming out of the pandemic.
“We were back in action and thought there would actually be a little better action, but nationwide we found that wasn’t the case,” said Dr Niehoff.
Instead, CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini said the past few years had only exacerbated an already widening problem.
“We are facing a mental health and social and emotional regulation crisis that the pandemic has added to,” he said.
Consciously or not, it’s moments like Tuesday that Barbara McClain is calling for help.
“As a community, we need to be a little more involved,” she said.
Middletown Police continue to investigate the situation. The school said police presence would be added throughout the rest of the week.
