Fifth-round pick Tyler Allgaier of the Atlanta Falcons has had one of the most productive rookie seasons in franchise history…and never even got a chance to take the hardware home.
The NFL officially announced its three nominees for Offensive Rookie of the Year, but Allgeier was not among them. Instead, the award will go to one of Seattle Seahawks running back Ken Walker III, New York Jets receiver Garrett Wilson and New Orleans Saints receiver Chris Olave.
Allgaier, who went from a healthy scratch in Week 1 to become the franchise’s all-time leader in rushing yards in a single season by a rookie, was the top running back with the third-best rushing attack in the league.
The former BYU Cougar finished the year with 1,035 yards on 210 carries and three touchdowns, adding 16 receptions for 139 yards and a score in the air. He became the fourth rookie in Falcons history to surpass his 1,000 scrimmage his yardage. This he accomplished in just 15 games, ultimately finishing with 1,174 total offensive yards.
It’s important to note that each of the three finalists had a great year.
Walker III was one of the best rookie rushers in the league, with 1,050 more yards on the ground than Algaier, but 18 more carries. However, he had nine touchdowns. This is more than double that of Algaia. total.
Olave and Wilson both topped the 1,000-receiving-yard mark, with the former passing for 1,042 yards and four touchdowns on 72 passes, and the latter for 1,103 yards and four points on 83 receptions. Wilson is considered to be the overwhelming favorite for the award.
But what shouldn’t be lost in the mix is Allgaier’s prodigiousness as he became a true three-down back who excelled in pass protection, wore down defense throughout the game, rarely made negative plays and didn’t fumble a single time. It’s a rise.
Ultimately, knocking out any of the three contenders is tough…but Allgeier’s rookie season isn’t all that impressive now that the awards have been revoked.
The Falcons appear to have made it to the fifth round, but Algaier continues to prove that belief right.
