The Athletics have opened a spot in the 2023 starting rotation.

The A’s officially traded left-handed pitcher Cole Irvin and right-handed prospect Kyle Bilvitzki to the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday in exchange for shortstop candidate Darrell Hernize.

Hellnize is listed as the Orioles’ 16th most promising player, according to MLB.com. Hellnize, his fifth-round pick from Baltimore in 2019, finished in Single A (32 games), High A (60 games) and Double A (13 games) last season.

Irvin has been an innings eater for Auckland the last two seasons and has scored 359 1/3 frames since arriving at the A’s in 2021.

Last season, Irvin went 9-13 with a 3.98 ERA and a 4.21 FIP in 30 appearances. He whiffed just 128 batters in 181 innings and walked 36.

Virbitsky, 24, has yet to cross the High-A ball in his career. He recorded a 4.63 ERA and his 140 strikeouts in 126 1/3 innings last season with Single-A Stockton Port and High-A Lansing Lugnuts.

With Irvin off the roster, the A’s will fill the rotation with the likes of Paul Blackburn, James Caprilian, Dalton Jeffries, Adam Oler, Ken Waldichuk and Shintaro Fujinami.
