PHOENIX – Arizona’s women’s basketball team is waving the white flag this weekend after a string of conference losses and injuries.

ASU announced Wednesday that it will withdraw from two road matchups against No. 10 Utah and Colorado because the team does not have enough players. The game will not be made up and the forfeit will be considered a league win for Utah and Colorado, according to a Pac-12 statement.

“After meeting with doctors and medical staff, we have come to the conclusion that we will not be traveling to Utah and Colorado this weekend. “With few healthy scholars, time to recover is our only option. We are ready to host Arizona on January 22nd.

ASU (7-11 overall, 0-7 in Pac-12) started the season with a five-game winning streak against non-conference opponents before that victory lap came to an abrupt end. The Sun Devils have remained winless in his seven games against Pac-12 opponents and will be absent this weekend, but the team is looking to end the skid with a win against in-state rival Arizona. The team was able to get nine players for Sunday’s game against Oregon State, but five of the team’s 13 scholarship players were listed as ineligible. Pac-12 guidelines require ASU to have a minimum of seven scholarship players available to play.

“I deeply sympathize with our team who want to compete, but due to medical reasons they are unable to do so. Health should be maintained as a primary focus.

The Sun Devils hope to bounce back from their 0-7 record in the conference, but a recent injury bug has left them with fewer returning players this season, limiting their time to practice at full power. problem is getting worse. Going into the season, juniors Jadan Simmons and Imogen Greenslade were the only players returning with significant playing time. Sophomore Meg Newman missed the entire 2021-22 season due to injury, but is back to play a key role this season.

After a three-game road trip in early January, the Sun Devils suffered from fatigue and constant travel, and injuries piled up, so it’s unclear when the team will return to full form. ASU will have a week to rest and recuperate before Arizona arrives in Tempe for a rivalry game.

A failure by the Sun Devils to meet the requirements to restart the season against the Wildcats would force them to withdraw from Game 3, leaving the question of why the team unfit to stay healthy.
