After a quality rookie year in 2021, Warren, who turned 27 in February, dipped a bit in 2022, wrestling a 5.63 ERA in 16 frames. That’s after he posted a 1.77 ERA in his 20 1/3 innings the previous year, along with a 6% walk rate and his 23.8% strikeout.
But strikeouts fell off a cliff last year, as Warren not only beat out just 12.9% of the hitters he faced in the big leagues, but also slightly increased the number of free passes he made. Warren also saw his ground ball percentage drop from 53.4% in his rookie season to 37.4% in 2022. He fared much better last season in Triple-A with a 2.12 ERA he threw 34 innings.
Even with a quality sample in 2021, the other 29 clubs missed an opportunity to sign Warren, so the Angels can keep him in their organization this year. With a year left, even if the Angels call him up again in 2023, they could bring him back to the minors in the next few seasons.
