Amarillo, Texas (KFDA) – Legend Boxing brings together panhandle boxers and mixed martial artists in a way not found in many other regions.
“A lot of gyms in most areas are at war with each other,” said James Shelnut, co-owner of The Farm Sports Management Group. “Here in Amarillo, where all the gyms come together and legends boxing is very different from where all the gyms come together and spar.”
Fighters train in legends and coach classes for children interested in participating in the sport.
“We are like family,” Legends Boxing owner Tim Rodriguez told NewsChannel10. “All the gyms are coming together and trying to help each other. We encourage them and help them build the self-esteem they need.”
Birkenden Freeman will compete in the group’s New Year’s opener on January 15 in Houston.
“They’ve all done so much for me, so in the end, I feel the most confident I’ve ever had to prepare for a match. Freeman “I feel really strong, really fast, mentally ready and confident. It’s about making you feel comfortable and at home, and they do a really great job of making you feel that way.”
Their goal as a group is not only to unite in sports, but to represent the Panhandle as best they can.
“I’m basically trying to be 806 against everyone else,” said featherweight mixed martial artist Ash Mallory. “We’re just trying to represent our city and represent where we’re from. Different struggles we’ve had. Express yourself the way you want to express yourself.” This is our art form, this is what we want to do.”
