A former University of Alabama basketball player was behind bars Sunday night after being arrested in connection with a deadly shootout near the campus, officials said.

Darius Hairston-Miles, 21, of Washington, D.C., was arrested after a gunfight broke out in his car near the Strip, a nightlife district adjacent to the Tuscaloosa campus, according to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. I was one of two men.

He was charged with murder and was being held without bail, the office said in a statement. The victim was 23-year-old Jamea Jonah Harris.

None of the other parties were affiliated with the institution. It is not clear if Miles has retained a private attorney on the matter. He reached out to the Tuscaloosa public defender’s office for comment, but so far has not received a response.

The Alabama Athletics announced on Sunday that it would extend its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim and that Miles would no longer be part of the basketball team.

Miles’ name was not on the online basketball roster late Sunday.

The basketball show announced Saturday that junior forward Myles has been ruled out for the rest of the season after aggravating a preseason injury.

It was not clear if Miles was no longer a student or if the institution was able to expel him without formalities. The sheriff’s statement addressed his position at the university in the past tense.

The shooting was reported early Sunday morning in the nightlife district. Sheriff officials declined to say which of the two suspects was alleged to have fired the shots, or whether they believed both did.

“At this time, it appears the shooting occurred as a result of a minor altercation between the victim and the suspect after they met on the strip,” the sheriff’s office said.

Shortly before 2 a.m., a driver pulled over in a University of Alabama police vehicle on the Walk of Champions adjacent to the Bryant-Denny Stadium strip and reported being fatally shot with passengers still inside.

The driver told investigators that someone in another car opened fire on his car just off the strip and he returned fire, possibly injuring someone in the opposite car.

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Violent Crimes Division tracked down the two suspects after speaking with witnesses and watching security videos, the office said.

One of the two suspects was injured in the shootout, the office said. It did not specify or mention whether he was hospitalized.

The other suspect, also charged with capital murder, has been identified as Michael Lynn Davis, 20, of Charles County, Maryland.

The university said it was cooperating with the investigation.

Members of the campus community affected by the violence will be able to connect with campus counselors, even during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday, the university said in a statement.
