Nick Pivetta isn’t a particularly slow pitcher, but the Boston Red Sox pitcher isn’t a big fan of the specific rules Major League Baseball is enforcing into 2023.
Every MLB team has a pitch clock. Starting when the pitcher receives the ball from the catcher, he is given 15 seconds between pitches. It’s expected to help speed up the game, and judging by how minor league games rarely last longer than his three hours, that’s exactly what it seems.
Plus, you can avoid pitchers like former Red Sox southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez feeling like it takes hours to throw a pitch.
For many pitchers who have been in the league for most, if not all of their careers, there can be an adjustment period. Pivetta, a member of the MLB Players Association, isn’t the biggest fan of rule changes.
“Ultimately it’s up to the league,” Pivetta said. Appearing on WEEI at the Red Sox Winter Weekend on Saturday. “I’m in the union, so I know a lot about that stuff. All the players voted against these rules. It’s up to MLB to put these rules in place. We have no control over these rules, we have no control over which rules are introduced….
“I don’t think anyone is really excited about changing the game and not having a certain say at the end of the day, especially when you’re competing in the field. It’s a tough situation, but the league is in that situation.”
Pivetta explained his stance on the pitch clock.
