Basketball readiness: Sherman Oaks Notre Dame beat Doherty Valley

Despite losing eight, the Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (15-8) are looking to secure a playoff spot in the Southern Section Open Division by playing one of Southern California’s toughest schedules.

A 64-53 victory over Northern California’s No. 1 team, the San Ramon-Doherty Valley Highs (19-2), in the State Preview Classic on Saturday night certainly helps the Knights’ cause.

Mercy Miller scored 17 points, Dusty Stromer scored 15 and Caleb Foster scored 11.

Combined with Wednesday’s two overtime losses to No. 1 Harvard-Westlake, the Knights show they can compete with the best.

On Friday night, the Pauley Pavilion will host the all-important Mission League game against Sierra Canyon.

Village Christian 59, Colony 48: Immanuel Taylor and Thomas Ruzak each scored 17 points at Village Christian. Denzel Hines scored his 17 points for Colony.

St. Francis 75, Fairfax 64: George Tupy scored 21 points and helped St. Francis win overtime. Dariusker scored his 25 points at Fairfax.

Campbell Hall 74, Hillcrest 67: Tanner Jones scored 17 points at Campbell Hall (14-9).

Mater Dei 88, Cean Lutheran 65: Monarch scored 31 points from freshman Brannon Martinsen. Freshman Kaiden Bailey scored his 28 points on his Luther clean.

Loyola 69, Calabasas 38: The Coyotes struggled one night after upsetting Thousand Oaks in the Marmonte League contest. Hugh Vandeweghe scored his 15 points and Jonas de Krassel scored his 14 points.

Saint Bonaventure 76, Mission Viejo 67: Dylan Benner had 36 points and 17 rebounds for St. Bonaventure.

Rolling Hills Prep 64, Los Altos 28: JV Brown led Rolling Hills Prep with 20 points.

St. Anthony 61, Long Beach Poly 55: Tyler Small scored 15 points at St. Anthony. Cash Stokley scored 20 points on Poly.

AGBU 90, Avalon 40: Matthew Sahnazoglu made a school-record 12 threes and scored 46 points for AGBU (15-3).

women’s basketball

Mater Dei 76, St. Mary’s 61: Jenessa Cotton has 22 points and 15 rebounds for the Monarchs.

Brentwood 68, McFarland 36: Emma Dudley led Brentwood with 24 points.
