LOS ANGELES — Lakers coach Durbin Hamm has watched his team lose a close game this past week.

On Friday night Hamm saw the team’s grit and determination come to fruition.

Dennis Schrader completed the 3-point play 7.6 seconds after the steal and Los Angeles overtook Memphis 122-121 to extend the Grizzlies’ winning streak to 11 games.

“It’s a momentum swing to get a win like this,” Hamm said. “After the Sacramento game, our players were depressed, but we worked on areas that needed improvement. Without the type of fight we had, there is no way we can win this game.”

The Lakers have lost by a total of 10 points in their last three games. They trailed 114-107 and outscored the Grizzlies 15-7 with 3:04 remaining.

Schrader stole the ball from Desmond Bain near halfcourt and made a layup while being fouled by Bain to equalize on 120.

“I wanted to trap first before I fouled,” said Schrader, who scored 19 points. I stole it, pushed the ball, got fouled and ended the play.”

After a timeout, Memphis’ Brandon Clarke was fouled with 1.9 seconds remaining. He made the first free throw but missed the second. Bain got the offensive rebound but lost control, giving the Lakers possession with 0.4 seconds remaining.

Russell Westbrook led the Lakers with 29 points and LeBron James added 23.

The Lakers outrebounded 63-47 but trailed 20-4 on fast break points.

“We were resilient the whole game,” James said. “We stuck to the game plan. We gave ourselves a chance to win the game.”

Ja Morant led Memphis with 22 points. Clarke and Tyus Jones each added 20, while Stephen Adams tallied his 16 points and 17 rebounds.

Free throws were one of the big reasons the Grizzlies lost. They were 26 of 40 from the line, under 65% for the ninth time this season.

“They beat us for 48 minutes. Brief and simple. A terrible effort,” said Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins.

Morant missed his first five shots and went 2-of-10 for 6 points in the first half before halftime with Shannon Sharp (Pro Football Hall of Famer and Fox Sports personality) courtside. and had a heated conversation.

Morant scored 14 points in the third quarter and the Grizzlies maintained a 13-point lead in the second half.

“We gave up too many second-chance points. We just have to win a 50-50 play,” Morant said. “There are many good things, but there are also many things that need to be cleaned up.”
