Women’s basketball loses to #22 Villanova, 73-57

Omaha, Nebraska — The cold in the first quarter went too far as the Clayton Women’s Basketball Team lost 73-57 to #22 Villanova on Friday, Jan. 20.

The loss lifted the Blue Jays to 12-6 on the season, 6-4 in Big East play, and Villanova to 18-3 overall and 9-1 in conference action.

In the first quarter, Villanova scored 15-10 from the field (66.7%) while the Blue Jays were held 10-15 0-0 (0%) and trailed 26-6 after 10 minutes. It was a game difference because I took it. The second quarter improved, but the Blue Jays were down 46-19 in the first half, shooting 4-of-28 (14.3%).

Creighton found their rhythm in the second half, going 13 for 23 (56.5%) in the final 20 minutes, but the deficit was too large to overcome.

Four Blue Jays finish in double figures as juniors Lauren Jensen (Lakeville, Minnesota), morgan marie (Crete, Nebraska) and Sr. Carly Batchelor (Topeka, Kansas) All achieved 11 points, but as juniors mallory brake (Hastings, Minnesota) finished with 10 points.

Villanova scored a game-high 23 points from Maddy Siegrist and set a Villanova scoring record with 2,414 career points. Lucy Olsen and Muddy Burke also gave the Wildcats 19 and 15 points respectively.

Clayton will return to hardwood on Tuesday, January 24, as the Blue Jays travel to Providence to face the Friars.
