Brazilian footballer Dani Alves was arrested on Friday after he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Spain, after a judge denied bail for the former Barcelona defender.
The alleged assault occurred at a Barcelona nightclub on Dec. 31, police told The Associated Press.
Alves was taken into custody after responding to police calls. State prosecutors had asked him to be held without bail, and a judge agreed after hours of testimony and indicting him for sexual assault.
A sexual assault accusation in Spain could mean anything from unwanted and unwanted sexual groping to rape.
Alves denied the allegations in a video sent to Spanish TV station Antenna 3 last week. While admitting he was at the club, he said he didn’t know the woman, adding, “I’ve never invaded anyone’s personal space.”
Alves, 39, is one of the most successful players in football, having won major titles with several elite clubs such as Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain during his long career. He currently plays for Mexican club Pumas.
The defender was a key part of Barcelona’s golden age, playing on the team’s right flank behind Lionel Messi from 2008 to 2016. He made a brief comeback last season with the Catalan club, where he won the Champions League three times.
