Mariners Soccer Team’s Caitlin Murphy Beats Soquel in SCCAL Action

Caitlin Murphy had a goal and an assist as the Aptos High women’s soccer team knocked off Soquel 3-1 in the team’s Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League game on Thursday.

Soquel’s Lily Montesinos scored a set goal from long range, putting both teams in a 1-1 stalemate.

Gwen Chapman and Angelique Nunez scored goals in the second half for the Mariners. Alexa Castaneda finished with two assists.

Murphy scored in the fifth minute, Chapman in the 42nd and Nunez in the 57th.

“We made two big mistakes in the second half,” said Knights manager Jose Sierra. “Kudos to Aptos for taking the opportunity.”

Mariners goaltenders Alessandra Zuniga and Evelyn Pini split the time, making three saves each.

Aptos (8-3-1, 4-0-0) will play at Harbor (7-6-2, 1-2-2) on Tuesday at 7pm.

Pacific College 3, Rancho San Juan 1: Rosalyn Bourdow scored in the 3rd and 43rd minutes as Pumas won the PCAL Mission Division match on Thursday.

Ciara Pommerenke scored in the 35th minute and provided 2 assists. Katya Korobov also assists.

PCS keeper Taylin Whitten-Hannah played the first 50 minutes but ended the match with an injury. She made ten saves and gave up one goal in extra time at the end of the first half. Whitten-Hannah was replaced by Bourdow, who made six saves.

PCS (3-5-0, 1-2-0) will host Soledad at Soquel High on Monday at 7pm.

Aptos 1, Sokel 0: In the 79th minute, a pass from Andrew Lopez was headed in by Caleb Placencia for the Mariners to complete a shutout in Thursday’s SCCAL-winning game.

Mariners manager Roberto Zuniga said: “The team was explosive, connecting passes, making crosses and creating many chances.

Aptos (8-5, 3-1) will play at Harbor (10-1-2, 5-0-0) on Tuesday at 5pm.

At Monte Vista Christian 2, Gonzales 0: Seniors Luke Hollingsworth and Evan Mariscal each scored a goal in the PCAL Cypress division for the Mustangs on Thursday.

MVC will take on Marina in a make-up match at Seaside High on Saturday at 4pm.

Santa Cruz 60, San Lorenzo Valley 26: The Cardinals took a 23-8 lead with four dunks in the first quarter.

The team’s January 6th meeting has been postponed due to a power outage caused by the storm.

Sophomore Kirby Shields scored a team-high 14 points for the Cardinals. Bendotten had his 12 points, 10 rebounds and Adencurie had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Demeke Smith had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Jacob Saunders led SLV with nine points, while Damian Aguilar scored seven.

At 7:30 pm on Friday, Santa Cruz (15-3, 4-0) will play Scotts Valley while SLV (3-12, 0-5) will play Harbor.

Stevenson 73, MVC 41: The Mustangs lost the PCAL Mission Division match on Thursday.

at Stevenson 42, MVC 40: Sophia Telles scored 11 points in Thursday’s defeat of the Mustangs’ narrow PCAL mission division. Kayla Rader scored her eight points.

Emma Hall scored 16 points for Stevenson and Sidney Crimo scored 13 points.

MVC hosts Monterey on Mondays at 7pm

men’s volleyball

UC Santa Cruz 3, Cal Lutheran 1: The Banana Slugs kicked off the season with a 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22 victory over fellow NCAA Division III independent program the Kingsmen at Westfield House on Thursday.

Santa Cruz alum senior outside hitter Colton Jeffery had 18 kills and 6 digs. The freshman opposite Neu Fisher had 12 kills and senior middle blocker/opposite Zachary Thompson had 9 kills.

Junior setter Mohan Duvri had 23 assists, while Santa Cruz freshman and setter Leo Tancer had 15.

Senior libero/outside hitter Maxwell Mednick had six assists and three digs. Junior middle blocker Colby Hurdle had five blocks and he had three aces.

Ben Weber led the Kingsmen (1-2) with 15 kills, 4 digs, 2 assists and 2 aces.

The UCSC Slug Slam will be held on Friday and Saturday. Followed by the Banana Slugs (1-0), who host North his Park on Friday at Kaiser Permanente Arena at 8:30 a.m., followed by Cal his Lutheran vs. Illinois Wesleyan at 10:45 a.m.

The rest of the first day’s activities will travel to West Field House, where UCSC will host Edgewood at 1:00 PM.

Fontbonne will face North Park at 3:15 p.m., Cal Rousselan will face Edgewood at 5:30 p.m. and Fontbonne will face Illinois Wesleyan at 7:45 p.m.

men’s basketball

Fresno Pacific 80, UCSC 45: Eric DeBrain had eight points and eight rebounds in the Banana Slugs’ loss to the NCAA D-II Sunbirds at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Thursday night.

Darin Parson and Kyle Monk each scored 15 points for the Sunbirds (5-12).

UCSC will play Colorado College (7-9) at noon on Saturday in Colorado Springs.
