Anton Walkes, a defender for major league soccer team Charlotte FC, died Thursday after the boat he was driving struck another vessel in Miami, officials said. he was 25 years old.
According to the Miami Herald, Walks was found unconscious Wednesday afternoon following a clash near Miami Marine Stadium. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition after the Miami Fire and Rescue Team reportedly attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene.
Charlotte FC sporting director Zoran Kurneta told CBS Sports: “We are heartbroken for the loss of Anton Wolkes, a truly wonderful father, a loving person and an outstanding human being. “Anton embodies what it means to be part of Charlotte Football Club and our entire community mourns this tragedy.”
The England native was signed by Tottenham Hotspur FC at the age of 16, according to NBC Miami. He was eventually loaned out to League One team Portsmouth before joining Atlanta his United FC in his first year as a major league footballer.

Charlotte FC owner David Tepper recalled the Walkes:
“Anton made those around him a better person…and represented Charlotte FC to the highest standards both on and off the pitch,” added Tepper.
Walks joined Charlotte FC in 2021 and started 21 of 23 games last season. He made a total of 93 MLS appearances. In 2020, he told Miller that his girlfriend gave birth to their first child, and that family meant “the world” to him.
