Gary Sanchez, the best outfielder in MLB and more

According to MLB Network’s top 10 list, all three prospective outfielders for the Los Angeles Angels’ opening day are ranked in the top 10 at their respective positions. Hunter Renfro was ranked as the 10th best right fielder, Mike Trout was considered the best center fielder, and Taylor Ward was ranked as the 4th best left fielder.

With that in mind, do the Angels have the best outfield in baseball? The Astros are the only other team with three outfielders in the top 10. Another team worth considering is the Braves, who have stars in the outfield in Ronald Acuna Jr. and Michael Harris, but are unsure in left field.

The Angels are reportedly keen on free agent catcher Gary Sanchez. With Logan Ohoppe inexperienced, Max Stassi having a terrible year, and an uncertain catcher position, it makes sense that the Angels are interested in the catcher. What I don’t want is Ohhoppe not gunning for a spot on the Opening Day roster. This is what the Sanchez signing does.

The Marlins looking for Luis Araez on Pablo Lopez make it much less likely that the Angels will be able to execute right-handed trades. Araez is an All-Star who just won the batting title. The decline from him to a player with the ability of Luis Lengifo is huge. The Angels likely don’t have the pieces to sign a deal and unfortunately need another starter.

Red Sox sign Lymel Tapia to minor league dealTapia is a player I thought the Angels would consider for a fourth outfield vacancy, but they hired Brett Phillips for the role. Tapia is a better hitter than Phillips, but not as much as defender Phillips. The Angels prioritized grabs over bats.

The Red Sox have a “huge” interest in pitcher Tanner Hook. Hauck works in the Boston rotation and bullpen and could be traded. He would be an interesting sixth starter option, but the Angels would probably be better off going with a veteran of that slot than trading an unproven starter.
