CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Soccer player Anton Walkes, who started his career with Tottenham, died Thursday after an accident in Florida, his MLS club Charlotte FC said. he was 25 years old.

Charlotte said in a statement that Walkes died early Thursday morning without giving details of the accident.

The Miami Herald reported that he was involved in a collision between two boats near Miami Marine Stadium on Wednesday.

Charlotte FC owner David Tepper said everyone at the club was “devastated by the tragic death of Anton Walkes”.

“He was a wonderful son, father, partner and teammate, and his joyful approach to life inspired everyone he met,” said Tepper of the club. said in a statement.

Walkes started his career with Tottenham in the English Premier League and also played in Portsmouth before signing for MLS side Atlanta United.

He joined Charlotte for the club’s debut MLS season in 2022.

“Anton has made those around him better people in all aspects of their lives and represented Charlotte FC to the highest standards both on and off the pitch,” said Tepper.
