PORTLAND, Oregon — The NBA is committed to improving basketball in France and Africa.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and French President Emmanuel Macron have announced plans to work together on a range of initiatives to boost the sport at all levels.
Ligue 1 and France have senior-level executive groups that work with the French Basketball Federation (FFBB). The formal partnership will be announced to coincide with his 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.

The NBA will share best practices across teams, league business and basketball operations to grow Ligue Nationale de Basket (LNB), France’s top professional league. The league will explore exhibition game opportunities featuring teams and players from the NBA, LNB and Basketball Africa League (BAL).
The NBA and France will also have grassroots programs in the run-up to the Olympics. As the league seeks to bring the NBA experience to France, it wants interactive fan events and player appearances.
The NBA and FFBB will expand their existing basketball development programs. The league and France plan to invest more in hoop infrastructure in Africa. This includes multi-purpose facilities that can host BAL and NBA games.
“We are honored to work with President Marcon, the French Basketball Federation and the LNB to bring great momentum to French basketball and the NBA,” Silver said in a press release. I strongly believe in its power to inspire and connect with the sport and see great potential to grow sport and promote economic opportunities in France and Africa.”

President Macron, Silver, NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum, Head of NBA Basketball Operations Joe Dumars and FFBB President Jean-Pierre Ciutat were in Paris on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s NBA Paris game featuring the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls. I had a meeting with him.
With nine this season, France has more NBA players than any other country outside of North America.
