The Kansas City Chiefs will return to the international stage in 2023 with a regular-season game in Germany, the NFL announced Thursday.
The Chiefs’ opponents, cities, stadiums, kickoff times, and weeks will all be revealed at a later date, according to the NFL, which previously announced that Munich and Frankfurt will host the games over the next four seasons.
The Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots were all designated for international play. Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt expressed his excitement over the Chiefs’ visit to Germany via NFL.com.
“We are very much looking forward to attending a game in Germany this fall and introducing Chiefs Kingdom to people around the world,” said Hunt. We have had a great experience in Mexico City and look forward to supporting the NFL’s efforts to continue growing the game in Germany.”
Chiefs President Mark Donovan explained that Germany is the team’s target market and detailed how KC will balance its domestic and international efforts.
“We are very excited to see the Kansas City Chiefs and Chiefs Kingdom all on the international stage in a game in Germany in 2023,” Donovan said in a press release. We have been aggressively pursuing this opportunity as we are committed to growing our game and brand internationally. We believe we can and at the same time create a memorable and unique experience for our German fans.”
The expansion to a 17-game NFL season allows the league to designate up to four teams to play their ninth regular-season home game at an internationally neutral location. This will be KC’s third international regular season game in team history, following a game against the Lions in London in 2015 and a game against the Los Angeles Chargers in Mexico City in 2019.
