The Troup footballer is recovering from a traumatic brain injury he suffered in September.

Troop, TX — Free throws are one of the simplest parts of basketball. If fouled, free worth 1 point he goes to the line for a chance to shoot a throw.

But at Troup High School Wednesday afternoon, the free throws were worth far more than that.

The Troup Basketball Program decided to host a free throw fundraiser, “Hoop for Coop.” The free throw fundraiser will donate to Cooper Reid for every shot.

Troup footballer Reed, who suffered a traumatic brain injury more than four months ago, is recovering in a hospital in Houston. So the basketball show decided to root for it in its own way.

“We were in a tournament earlier in the year, blaring free-throw after throw. But for some reason, the solution hit me like a bunch of bricks.” Darin Harley, head coach of Troup basketball, said, “Let’s have a free-throw competition for Cooper. Maybe we can improve our free-throws in the meantime.”

All members of the basketball team received donation sheets to fill out prior to the fundraiser. Due to the supportive nature of the Troup community, getting a pledge to donate was perfectly fine. In fact, some kids even had to come back for a second donation sheet.

Emory Cover is one of the Troup Lady Tigers participating in the fundraiser. To her and many people at Troop High School, Cooper was a friend. So being able to support her friend in need meant a lot to her and the team.

“We’re really excited to be able to play basketball and help a friend who has been worried about us for a long time.”

“Hoops for Coop” is just one of the many ways the Troop community has shown tremendous support as Cooper Reed and his family continue their long road to recovery.

But one thing is certain. It means continuing to send prayers and support as long as the community needs it.
