As a game, it wasn’t much. Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka called it up and wished it had picked up a few more yards.
But he still liked it.
“It was good,” Kafka said Wednesday. “It was a weekly addition to that game.
It looked sweet. In the second quarter of his 31-24 playoff win over the Vikings, the Giants burst into the red zone and made a gadget play, commonly referred to as the Statue of Liberty play, from the 9-yard line. The Giants call it “Lady Liberty.” Daniel Jones took the shotgun snap of him and faked a throw to the right flank to send it to Saquon his Barkley and, in the same move, passed the ball backwards with his left hand. “Some things had to happen for the play to work,” Kafka said. “I thought it was the right situation.”
Kafka joked that the Giants worked on the play last week as soon as the media left the practice field.
“The creativity that the staff has, the players love that sort of thing,” he said. I think we’ve handled them. They’re decent plays. These are things we’re building for attack and we want to keep building.”
OLB Azeez Ojulari is on the right track, albeit with limited attendance in practice. Ojulari was kicked out of the Giants’ win last week with a quadriceps bruise when QB Kirk Cousins inadvertently kicked his thigh high. He said the pain was better than it was at the beginning of the week.
“If they say it’s good and they say they can’t hurt themselves any more, I’ll try,” Ojulari said.
CB Adley’s Jackson (back) participated fully in practice. This is a good sign after his return to play against Minnesota after a sprained knee saw him miss seven straight games. S. Jason Pinnock (abdomen) also practiced with all his might. Other Limited Players: LB Landon Collins (ankle), WR Isiah Hodgins (ankle), S Julian Love (hamstring), CB Fabian Moreau (hip).
Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale wasn’t a big fan of DT Dexter Lawrence’s roughing the passer penalty that gave the Vikings a first down late in the fourth quarter.
“It doesn’t matter what I think,” said Martindale. “I got the texts… after that game, the calls from all the mates, coaches, etc. who were watching the game weren’t very welcome. It happens. Bang bang play. I’m proud.” The thing was, we just played the next one and it wasn’t going to affect us.
Asked if he had an explanation for the penalty — was it because Lawrence knocked Cousins down or hit him in the head? — Martindale said:they talk to brian [Daboll] You know, I had to go to my next call.Mr [NFL commissioner Roger] Goodell has never stopped a match and said, ‘Wait a minute. Wink is angry. He wants to talk to an official about something. “They are getting ready to go to the next play.”
