Beloved Fort Worth Boxing Coach Shot Dead After Arguing With Family

Fort Worth, Texas – The Fort Worth youth boxing community mourns the passing of a beloved boxing coach.
Police say Joe Guzman was shot dead during an altercation at his Fort Worth home on Monday.
Pictures posted on social media and at Fort Worth boxing clubs show friends mourning their loss. They say he had a passion for teaching the sport of boxing to young people.
A boy who also lived in the 3300 block house on Ray Simon Drive was taken into custody and charged with the fatal shooting.
Investigators say the two are part of a family, but have not been specific about how they are related.
“The male victim and male suspect in this case got into a verbal and then physical altercation,” said Fort Worth Police Officer Buddy Calzada. A few shots at the male victim turned fatal.”
Investigators say there was one witness at the home when the shooting occurred.They say the boy shot Guzman with a handgun.

The loss is especially hard for police who have worked closely with Guzman on youth boxing programs.
“It was through our police sports league, the PAL, that Mr. Guzman helped us,” Calzada said. “And it joined officials, young people and individuals in need of help. Mr. Guzman was always happy to help.”
Police have not released the boy’s age at this time. The exact charges facing the boy are unknown.
