LONDON (Reuters) – Tottenham Hotspur swooped in on Wednesday for Japanese World Cup winner Mana Iwabuchi on loan from local rivals Arsenal for the rest of the season.

Spurs are looking to rekindle their fortunes in the Women’s Super League, with the team sitting eighth on nine points from 10 games, 16 behind third-placed Arsenal.

Defender Iwabuchi, who won the World Cup with Japan in 2011, has made just three appearances for Arsenal this season and is looking to play more ahead of the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand later this year. Looking for time, he joined Tottenham.

Iwabuchi moved to England in 2020 and spent half a season at Aston Villa before signing for Arsenal and scoring on her Women’s Champions League debut.

“I am a smart player.

Iwabuchi is the second signing in the January transfer window after Spurs acquired England international forward Bethany England from Chelsea on a British record deal.
