The Chicago Cubs have claimed right-hander Julian Merryweather has waivers off the Toronto Blue Jays.
Right-hander Manny Rodriguez was named to make room on the 40-man roster.
Merryweather, 31, has appeared in 47 games in his last three seasons with the Blue Jays, posting a 5.64 ERA. His fastball reached its peak in his late 90s.
Rodriguez, 26, injured his right elbow last season and was sidelined for four months. Rodriguez has gone 2-0 with a 3.29 ERA in his 14 relievers outs for the Cubs in 22 years and he has four saves. He appeared in his 34 career Major League games, all in relief, going 5-3 with a 4.88 ERA and 5 saves.
Merryweather was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the fifth round of the 2014 draft from Oklahoma Baptist University.
