Chuck Liddell finished the fight, but never “never say”.
“The Iceman” made an ill-advised comeback after an eight-year absence in 2018 after a knockout loss to longtime rival Tito Ortiz in the first round. No thoughts of coming back in 2023… unless inspired by YouTuber-turned-boxing star Jake Paul.
The Professional Fighters League (PFL) did the unthinkable in the first two weeks of the year, signing Paul to a unique Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) contract and the ‘problem boy’ finally making his debut . Liddell doesn’t think he’ll be a welcome MMA opponent for Paul, but he’s open to it.
“You see, MMA? He wants to fight me in MMA now.” But he doesn’t want to fight me.
“I’m retired, I’m 53. Come on,” he continued. “But again, he doesn’t stand a chance. Certainly [I’d sign a contract]If he offered enough money, sure. “
Paul, 26, is undefeated in six professional boxing matches. Most recently, in October 2022, he defeated 47-year-old MMA legend Anderson Silva by unanimous decision (see highlights). In his three matches leading up to the match against Silva, Paul defeated his fellow former champions Tyrone Woodley (twice) and Ben Askren.
Paul’s specific next appearance has yet to be determined, but he has shown a consistent interest in putting together a bout with free agent superstar Nate Diaz. Despite Diaz’s veteran status as a 15-year member of the UFC’s roster, Paul also stated that he was “tired of beating these old guys.”
