Padres sign right-hander Domingo Tapia to a minor league deal, according to his transaction tracker for MLB.com. He will probably be invited to major league spring training.
Tapia, 31, has some major league success in 2021, split between the Mariners and Royals. Between these two clubs, he pitched 33 2/3 innings in his 34 appearances and posted an earned run average of 2.67. His 19.3% strikeout rate and his 11.1% walk rate were both a little worse than league averages, but he scored ground balls at his solid 46.8% rate.
In 2022, he was waived by the A’s and spent the season bouncing between the majors and minors. His Triple-A and MLB results have marks of 1.76 ERA in Las Vegas and 8.47 in Oakland. so there was no more difference. This is perhaps a sign of his low strikeout approach, allowing a .387 batting average in play in the majors but a .276 batting average in the Aviators.He also strands his 72.2% of baserunners in Vegas. However, in A only he was 62.2%.
The Padres might get a chance to change Tapia’s fortunes in 2023, or find a few more strikeouts and take their fate into their own hands. Last year his fastball averaged 97.9 mph and his strikeout rate was just 13.3%, but he fell below the 95th percentile among eligible hurlers. If Tapia can make it onto San Diego’s roster, he still has his one-year option left, which could provide the club with roster flexibility. And considering he hasn’t spent a full year in MLB yet, he could be cheaply kept in the future.
