The stove has been burning hot ever since the Houston Astros won the World Series title in November.
A handful of notable starters signed with new teams this offseason. Carlos Rodon of the New York Yankees and Justin Verlander of the New York Mets.
All in all, which team currently owns the best starting staff in MLB?
Below are my top 5 rotations for the 2023 season. This is also documented in the latest edition of “Flippin’ Bats”.
MLB top 5 pitching rotation.
Ben Verlander and Alex Curry find out which teams boast the best starting staffs in baseball.
Five. toronto blue jays
Kevin Gausman, Alek Manoah, Chris Bassitt — that top 3 is great. He’s probably one of baseball’s most underrated trios. And over a year ago Toronto made a big addition to Jose Berrios. He was supposed to come and be the man. If the Blue Jays can get what they expected from him, they look great.
4. Houston Astros
The Astros have the most underrated starting rotation in baseball. After losing Verlander, the consensus is that they simply wouldn’t be as good without last year’s AL Cy Young winner. That there was a real road to win the 2022 AL Cy Young. He broke the single-season record for consecutive quality starts (25). He is dominant and an ace. And while he’s finally become the Astros’ ace, their staff does more than that. Cristian Javier becomes a stud. And then there’s Luis Garcia. Many of these guys have been under the radar, but I believe they are ready to step up and become a fixture in that rotation.
3. Atlanta Braves
I think Spencer Strider is a superstar. In Aaron Judge’s pursuit of a home run record, many overlooked the fact that Strider broke Randy Johnson’s fastest season record of 200 strikeouts in 130 innings. And he did it as a rookie without even opening a season in the big leagues.Max Freed, I love you. Kyle Wright led the Major in wins. Charlie Morton; and then there’s the complete wildcard, Mike Soroka.Soroka is of man three years ago. He was the best of the young studs, but then he tore his Achilles tendon. Then he tore his Achilles tendon again on his comeback route. what are you going to get from him? I don’t know who knows, but either way, there’s a great rotation with striders who go on to become superstars in baseball games.
2. New York Yankees
Love the addition of Rodon. Gerrit Cole and Rodon’s 1st place and his 2nd place are special. I like Nestor Cortez. I don’t think he’ll continue to be the “nasty Nestor” we saw last year, but he’s his number three. The bigger question is whether Frankie Montas will be the Oakland A version of Montus or the man. Did you see the pinstripes battle hard at the end of last year? The Yanks also have Luis Severino, a two-time All-Star. This rotation has a legitimate 1-5 and a top 1-2 punch that no one wants to face in the playoffs. Rodon is Koace, Severino is probably 3 and Cortez is next with 4. And a wildcard for Montas, a potential All-Star at age 5? I love this rotation.
1. New York Mets
Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander. Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. Give Gerrit Cole-Carlos Rodón a 1-2. It’s close, but I think the Mets have the best starting duo in baseball. He has a forkball called “Yurei” in Japan. About a month ago, I went to the Driveline Baseball facility in Seattle. The facility is considered one of the game’s top player development organizations. Senga happened to be there, and the staff told me his folkball record was the best they’d ever seen. The Mets also have former AL he Cy Young candidate Carlos Carrasco. I like what they are doing, 1-2-3 is at the top of the rotation and will match anyone.
