On this day in Boston Celtics history, former Celtics small forward Billie Knight was traded to the Indiana Pacers for big man Rick Robey in 1979. A deal that sent Tiny Archibald and Marvin Barnes to Boston in exchange for Kevin Knaert, Kermit Washington, Sidney Wicks and Freeman Williams.

The Pennsylvania native didn’t spend much time with the Celtics. Knight played only 40 games with the team before being traded to the lobby, where he averaged 13.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.

He played four seasons with the Celtics, winning a title with the team as a reserve in 1981 before moving to the Phoenix Suns in 1983.

It’s also the birthday of former Celtic point guard Jerome “Gerald” McKinley Henderson Sr., born in 1956 in Richmond, Virginia.

The VCU alum had been drafted by the San Antonio Spurs with the 64th overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft (there were more draft rounds in that era), but was abandoned by the team.

After playing for the Tucson Gunners, a team in the Western Basketball Association (the region’s G League equivalent at the time), he signed with the Celtics as a free agent in 1979.

He played five seasons with the team, winning titles with Boston in 1981 and 1984 before being traded to the Seattle SuperSonics in October 1984.

Henderson is perhaps best known for stealing a pass from James Worthy of the Los Angeles Lakers and then tying the score in Game 2 of the 1984 NBA Finals, which the Celts would go on to win in overtime.

In the 1965 NBA Finals, John Havlicek’s similarly decisive, iconic call was described in words similar to those used 19 years ago by legendary announcer Johnny Most. Virginia later recalled the strange feeling of the moment.

On the same day in 1982, former Celtics forward Justin Reid was born in Jackson, Mississippi.

The Ole Miss alum was drafted by Boston with the 40th overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft and played 55 games over two seasons with the Celtics before moving from Marcus Banks, Mark Blunt and Ricky Davis to Dwayne Jones’ Minnesota NBA Draft. Transferred to the Timberwolves. , Michael Olowokandi, Wally Szczerbiak, and Pick.

Reed (RIP) is averaging 2.1 points per game for Boston.
