LeBron James sits second on the NBA’s all-time scoring list behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar after passing Karl Malone in March.
He joined him in another scoring milestone on Sunday as he came closer to Abdul-Jabbar’s record. With his shot jumping off the top in a game against the Philadelphia 76ers, James scored his 38,000th and his 38,001st career points. James and Abdul-Jabbar are the only players to climb the 38,000 point plateau.
Abdul-Jabbar’s record is now the only career scoring milestone remaining on James’ list. And it is visible. In his game against the 76ers on Sunday, James trailed Abdul’s Jabbar with his 38,367 career points by 386 points.
Going into Sunday’s game, James was averaging 29 points per game, the third-highest of his 20-year career. He is 38 and does so. If he can play and maintain the same average, he could pass Abdul his Jabbar in 14 games. The Lakers have his 39 games left after Sunday’s game against the 76ers.
Assuming he stays healthy, James is on pace to pass Abdul-Jabbar in mid-February. A televised match would be a great setting. They also have to play all the games up to that point while James remains at or above average.
Either way, James fans won’t have to wait too long to celebrate him as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. Not bad for a player who has been praised by many as a playmaker rather than a scorer.
