South Carolina men’s basketball head coach Lamont Paris admitted in the preseason that he’s had some challenging games in his first season at Columbia.
Still, I don’t think the fans could have expected a match like the last two at home. In the past two games against the Tennessee Volunteers and the Texas A&M Aggies, the Gamecocks have won his 179-95 and Carolina has failed to start in either game.
As for the concerns that South Carolina needs to address, there are three main reasons that created the perfect storm for these defeats. Effort, confidence and ability to play within the system. In the Texas A&M loss, the Aggies secured his 32 more rebounds than the Gamecocks.
Hayden Brown’s absence certainly didn’t help the field, but aside from positioning and timing, rebounding is seen as an aspect of the game that is defined primarily by effort. It’s safe to say that there may be inconsistencies in the field.
Against Tennessee and Texas A&M, South Carolina was down by double-digit margins within the first five minutes of the game. As a perfect world for Paris, he wants to get his five players to shoot basketball.
No one lacks confidence. Gamecocks currently doesn’t tick any of those boxes. The problem is exacerbated because benches do not have sufficient depth of quality for these demanding SEC duties.
Paris said at a press conference early in the season that in a sport like basketball, there’s a difference between playing well and performing well. It means that you did everything right for the sake of it, and good performance means that players can perform when they need to.
You can’t do any of these things consistently in South Carolina right now. With 14 conference games left, the path of introspection and correction will not be easy.
South Carolina will play Tuesday night at Colonial Life Arena against the team of Ole Miss, who has beaten no opponents in the conference.
