Chelsea welcomed the English Football Association’s decision to make homophobic chants aimed at supporters a punishable crime, calling it a “step in the right direction” on Friday.

The FA announced Wednesday that ‘Rent Boy’ chants directed at Chelsea fans by rival supporters are now considered against the rules.

A letter was written to all clubs in the Premier League and across English football to try to enforce this point and eradicate discriminatory behavior.

“The ‘rent boy’ chants are intolerable and have no place in football or anywhere else,” Chelsea said in a statement. Being able to face sanctions is a step in the right direction and anyone who chooses to participate in this chant should know that their actions have consequences.”

There have been allegations of chants being made at a recent Chelsea match.

“The Football Association strongly condemns all offensive, abusive and discriminatory chants at football stadiums and is determined to eradicate this practice. It can have lasting and harmful effects and must be stopped.”
