The Cleveland Browns are scheduled to interview Eagles defensive backs coach and defensive passing game coordinator Dennard Wilson on Saturday about their open defensive coordinator position.

It would be a big loss for the Eagles.

News of the Browns’ plans to interview Wilson was first reported by CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, but Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot reported that the interview is scheduled for Saturday.

The Eagles should hope that the Browns will prolong this process. Jonathan Gannon is once again a head coach candidate at Houston, and his most obvious in-house replacement is Wilson, who cannot be promoted if he’s already at Cleveland.

Wilson, 40, will serve as the Eagles’ defensive back coach starting in 2021, joining the staff under Nick Siriani and Gannon. This past season, he was promoted and added the title of Defensive Passing Game His Coordinator next to his name.

Wilson has spent years coaching defensive backs in the NFL. He was with the Jets before coming to Philadelphia and before that with the Rams. He also had coffee in the NFL as a player after being undrafted out of Maryland in 2004.

When Gannon began interviewing for the head coaching job last year, Wilson, of course, was thinking about how he would cope when he finally took the chair at DC.

“You see, I’ve been doing this for a long time and been around some great defensive coordinators in my opinion,” Wilson said this summer. “I was raised by Greg Williams and Todd Bowles. They are very good in this league and they are very thorough, so I have been mentored by them.

Last year, after an incredible 2021 season, Darius Sorey wondered aloud why Wilson had yet to be named defensive coordinator.

“He never took me the wrong way, never yet,” Srey said. “Like I said, I’m surprised he’s been in the game for 15 years and doesn’t work for DC because he’s a smart guy. He’s played in this league before. So I wouldn’t be surprised if he got a job like that sooner or later.”
