The Sam Houston women’s basketball team continued their hot winning streak on Friday night, pulling away in the second half to beat Burbank 70-47 in District 27-5A at Lanier High.
The win was the Hurricanes’ 11th win in their last 12 games and their second since losing 41-34 to division leader Jefferson on January 6. He is 6-4 at both Alamo Heights and Brackenridge.
Sam Houston manager Chancy Campbell said, “(Jefferson) is playing good so far, but I feel like we’re just around the corner.” But I remember how it felt, and I’ll do my best to make sure it doesn’t happen again. I feel confident that we can win the district title.
Burbank (11-17, 3-7), who have lost four of their last five games, stayed with Sam Houston for most of the first half. The Bulldogs lost him 14-10 after the first quarter and he trailed 33-22 at halftime. Burbank’s attempt to knock the Hurricanes off was a poor free throw as the Bulldogs were just 2/6 from the line in the first half and 15/4 to 3/4 when Burbank still had chances. Hampered by a shoot. But Sam Houston came quickly out of the locker room after halftime and used stifling pressure to create turnovers and easy baskets at the offensive end, extending the lead to 47-30 by the end of the third period. The Hurricanes then held Burbank to two field goals in the fourth quarter to add an exclamation point to the district’s victory.
“I feel like we started lazily,” Campbell said. “But once I bought in defensively, I felt like I could flip the switch and get things going.”
Sam Houston finished with three players in double figures, led by Yasmin Brown’s 20 points. Chamariel Henderson and Cheyanne Mitchell each scored his 14 points for the Hurricanes, with Henderson scoring 12 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter.
“When the season gets this deep, you need multiple people who can score points,” Campbell said. “You can’t just leave it all to one person. (Brown) really stepped up for us in the first half and (Henderson) and (Mitchell) did it for us in the second half.”
Savannah Botero led Burbank with 14 points, including nine in the first half. Aubry Avila told the Bulldogs that he had 12 pitches, nine of which came after halftime.
Sam Houston will be back in action on Tuesday, heading to Alamo Heights for a 27-5A game that tips off at 6:45 p.m. Meanwhile, Burbank will host Edison on Tuesday at 8pm.
