Guardian and Right Arm Shane Bieber Reportedly avoided arbitration by agreeing to $10.01 million salary for 2023 New York Post’s John Heyman.
Bieber turned 28 in May and has spent his entire career in the Cleveland organization since being drafted in 2016. He made it to the big leagues by his 2018, and with a 4.55 ERA he was able to pitch 114 2/3 innings. He finished the next year with a 3.28 earned run average in 214 1/3 innings, striking out 30.2% of his hitters and hitting only 4.7% of them.
In 2020, the Bieber reached incredible heights, posting an ERA of just 1.63 this season and hitting 41.1% of the hitters he faced. His 3.2 wins as a replacement from FanGraphs led all pitchers in the league. He won American his league’s Rhino His Young and placed him fourth in the AL MVP voting.
Of course, it was a pandemic-shortened campaign, and Bieber never replicated those numbers for the entire season. Despite this, he still posted a 3.17 ERA in 16 starts. In 2022, he stayed fit, making 32 starts with a 2.88 ERA, stole 25% of his opponents and scored a ground ball 48.2% of the time while maintaining a meager 4.6% of steps. He also closed out the year with some strong starts in the postseason.
Bieber is coveted by fans at other clubs due to his massive success, and the Guardians are reportedly somewhat open to deals. and so far nothing has come together. He qualified for arbitration for the first time in his 2022 and got a raise to $6 million. He’s now just over $10 million, but MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz’s prediction that he’s just under $10.7 million. He’s eligible for one more trip through the ARB process in 2024, but plans to reach free agency after that campaign.
