Boxing coach plans grassroots talent hunt in Enugu

Enugu State Boxing Coach Blaise Ude says a massive grassroots talent discovery program to improve the state’s sport has been completed.

Ude, who disclosed this to the Nigerian News Agency in Enugu on Saturday, said those found from the training would take over from the experts when they retire.

According to him, as states lose boxers to other states and more, the discovery of grassroots talent is needed to keep the state alive and keep it going in the game.

“Professional boxers from Enugu travel abroad in search of greener pastures, which requires a change. That was the reason for the movement.

“For now, the state’s boxers are training in earnest for the next national youth game and would make the state proud if given the chance,” he said.

The 7th National Youth Games will be hosted by Delta State from February 8-18, 2023.

Houdet said the youth games will be held early for grassroots talent discovery, and noted that the exercise will start after the games.

“Our technical boxing team travels to outbacks, schools and communities across the state to discover future champion talent.

“We are all grassroots products and for this reason, the only solution to the decline of boxing in this country remains grassroots discovery,” added the coach.

He called on the state government to make things easier by reviving school sports and to discover talent in various sports.
