The Mavericks pulled off a 119-115 overtime win against the Lakers on Thursday night. However, the thrilling matchup didn’t come without some controversy.
The highly anticipated showdown between LeBron James and Luka Doncic included seven missed calls in the final minute, according to the NBA’s Last Two Minute Report. However, one of his two no-calls on a potential LA game-winning shot was deemed correct.
Lakers guard Troy Brown Jr.’s shot was contested by Mavericks guard Tim Hardaway Jr. at the end of regulation. According to reports, Hardaway “legally contested” Brown Jr.’s jumper and even made contact with the ball. As a result, the foul was not called. “High-five contact is considered incidental,” the report read.
But in the first overtime of the contest, LeBron James’ shot attempt with 2.9 seconds remaining saw a mistake from the referee. He said he “touched” James’ left arm before blocking. As a result, Wood’s “unfair contact” impacted James’ goal attempt on the field and the match ended in a draw.
Officials also missed a loose ball foul on Lakers forward Wen Yen Gabriel against Doncic with 2.4 seconds left in overtime. Doncic’s contact with Gabriel’s arm affected his “ability to control the rebound,” the report said. After the game, James didn’t hesitate to voice his thoughts on refereeing.
James skipped the comments while Brown was conducting a live interview with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
“No, it’s a foul,” James told McMenamin. “Foul. No matter what [Brown] Say, it’s a f—ing foul. It was–blat, they should have called it that. “
James wasn’t the only one who was dissatisfied. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said Thursday’s game was “the worst official game” and Doncic was “not respected.”
The Mavs and Lakers will meet two more times this season on February 26 in Dallas and March 17 in Los Angeles. Hopefully, the next two times these star-studded teams meet, the host won’t be the main storyline.
