Red Sox re-sign right winger sterling sharp According to Baseball America’s Chris Hilburn-Trenkel, he is on a minor league deal. The 27-year-old also spent the final part of the 2022 campaign with the Organization in Boston.
A 22nd round draft pick by the Nationals in 2016, Sharp advanced to the big leagues in 2020 as the Marlins’ Rule 5 pick. He made four appearances out of the Miami bullpen, allowing seven runs in 5 1/3 innings. The Marlins nominated him before the end of the season, waiving Rule 5 rights in the process. After clearing waivers, he was returned to the Nationals without taking a place on the 40-man roster.
The Michigan native remained in Washington’s farm system until midway through last year. The Nuts released him in August, but he soon caught up with Boston. In his seven starts with the Sea Dogs, he pitched to his 3.18 ERA, achieving a decent 22% strikeout rate and his 45.3% ground ball percentage.
Coming back after a short first trip to minor league free agency, Sharp made another face at the Boston organization. He provided rotation depth in the upper minor and could turn heads at Worcester in the triple-A after a solid finish in the double-A. Sharp still has a full number of optional years left, so the Sox could move him between Boston and the Upper Minors in the near future if they land a spot on their 40-man roster.
