World Boxing News asks why ‘Hitman’ Ricky Hatton isn’t in the International Boxing Hall of Fame?
Hatton is arguably the most followed British fighter of all time. Headlining Las Vegas, Mankunian became one of the few British boxers to become a prominent name in the United States.
Hatton, who retired in 2012 after a failed comeback, remained a two-division world champion and one of his country’s most beloved players.
Now a successful trainer and manager, “Hitman” is enjoying the fruits of his labor. He welcomed Tyson his Fury, Frank Bruno and others to Hyde his gym.
Hatton was in the corner of Fury’s first fight with Deontay Wilder.
Induct Ricky Hatton into the Boxing Hall of Fame
But one thing is missing. It is the site of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Of course, the last Briton to be inducted into the Hall of Fame was Joe Calzaghe in 2014. Standing alongside his recently deceased father Enzo, the Calzaghe and his wife shed tears of joy at Canastota’s honor.
Traveling to New York, Calzaghe was a symbol of happiness. His career achievements have been duly recognized on a global scale.
Ironically, Calzaghe’s staunch rival, Karl Froch, will next fight in 2023.
But not many would argue that Hutton deserves the same credit. Probably predates Froch.
Wherever the 44-year-old fought, a thousand men followed him like a Pied Piper. Hutton dominated the likes of Paulie Malignaggi, Jose Luis Castillo and Luis Colasso.
excellent resume
One man stood out in Hutton’s unusual résumé. That great person is Hall of Famer Kostja Tuju, and he’s one of the key reasons Hutton is included.
Hutton, then underdog, stopped Tsuju in the closing stages of the match, ending the Russian-born Australian’s career at age 35.
Tszyu certainly had plenty of room to spare, but Hatton’s sheer determination to become champion propelled him to victory.
For that reason, and for what has continued in America, Ricky Hatton must be strongly considered for 2024.
Deserving the 2023 Honor
Losses to the legends Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao aside, Hatton still earned the right to fight the two biggest superstars in recent memory.
The 2023 list is already named. Including Timothy Bradley Jr., Froch and Rafael Marquez. Hatton should be ahead of at least two retired fighters.
Additionally, the recent IBHOF move marks a time for Hutton and is in the minds of those in charge of voting.
The likable Briton will enter these conversations, hopefully soon in 2024.
It’s a shame it’s been six years since Hatton qualified. Get him out there!
