LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Florida Panthers 4-2 on Thursday night as William Career tied with 2:36 left.
The Panthers contested a career goal due to goalie interference. Officials ruled that he was shoved into Florida goaltender Sergey Bobrovski by Panthers’ Brandon Montour and kept the goal.
Keegan Kollcer’s pass found the carrier in the crease and caused a scrum. This was his second assist for Kollcer in this game.
William Carlson added an empty net goal for the final margin.
With this victory, the Knights, who have won 4 of 5 games, are the sole leader in the Pacific Division with 58 points, 2 points behind Los Angeles and 4 points behind Seattle.
The Panthers scored just 2:02 in an unusual sequence. Florida’s Aaron Ekblad made a breakaway past Knights goaltender Addin Hill, but it hit the right post. Nick Cousins recorded the rebound despite the goal coming off the mooring.
Officials who consulted with the NHL office determined that Vegas’ Ben Hutton ran Ekblad into the net.
Knights forward Mark Stone walked into the locker room late in the first period and did not return. He entered the game second on the team with 17 goals and 38 points.
The teams traded goals in the second period—Nicholas Roy of the Knights and Sam Reinhart of the Panthers. Reinhardt scored his goal on a power play against his team in Vegas, where he had only allowed one goal in penalties for his kills in the last 20 attempts.
Florida nearly extended their lead when Anton Randell scored from a sharp angle with 4:37 left, but Knights coach Bruce Cassidy challenged an offside play. The challenge was upheld and the score remained 2-1.
The Panthers had chances to score two goals early in the third round, but fell short on a 5-3 power play. During his 1 minute and 43 seconds of the two-man advantage, they only had one shot on goal.
Vegas made the Panthers pay when Kaedan Korczak spotted Jack Eichel on an outlet pass. Eichel made the rest and the game he tied for his third place with 8:37.
