Former NFL star Peyton Hillis is off a ventilator and “on the road to recovery,” just a week after saving children from drowning on a Florida beach last week, his girlfriend said Wednesday. told to
Hillis’ girlfriend Angela Cole called him a “hero” on Instagram, adding, “So proud of this man and so grateful to his family and this wonderful hospital.”
Cole also thanked Hillis’ family, friends, medical staff looking after him, and fans for their support.
“Keep praying that he still has a way out. But thank you for your prayers and love and support thus far. It really makes all the difference,” she said. It was a nice day.”
The day after the incident, Hillis’ uncle Greg Hillis wrote on Facebook that his nephew’s health was already “improving.”
“He’s still in intensive care and has some kidney and lung problems, but doctors say he’s improving.” I’m sure he wants everyone to know that he appreciates the prayers that were said!!!”
Hillis’ fans left comments on Cole’s post sharing a message of support for the recovering former athlete.
“So happy to hear this,” wrote one Instagram user. “Please let him know that this Cleveland Browns fan/Peyton Hillis fan has been praying for him and will continue to pray for him and your entire family.”
“Great news! Continuing prayers from Cleveland,” said another.
After playing college ball at the University of Arkansas, Hillis was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2008. During his seven-year career in the NFL, Hillis also played for Cleveland his Browns, Kansas City his Chiefs and the New York Giants. He made the cover of “Madden NFL 12,” following a breakout year with the Browns in which he tallied over 1,000 rushing yards and tallied 11 rushing touchdowns.
