The Phillies announced their savior Tuesday afternoon Vinnie Nittoli Released. He had lost his spot on the 40-man roster after Phils got it last week. Erich Yurmen from the Cubs.
Assuming he clears release waivers, Nittori will be headed for the free agency market. The right-hander has back-to-back non-roster contracts with the Twins, Yankees, and Blue Jays. He recorded Triple-A times for all three clubs without reaching a major.
Nittori was due to exercise an opt-out clause in its contract with Toronto last August. Philadelphia jumped in to acquire him and quickly added him to his MLB roster. The Phils pitched two scoreless innings, giving him two big league appearances.
The 32-year-old has made three MLB trips in the past two seasons. He mostly leaned on the slider during his brief run with Phils, but he averaged just under 93 mph on his fastball. He’s had a solid year in Triple-A, and in 52 frames he posted a 3.81 ERA with a 30.8% strikeout rate and just a 6.7% walk rate. He would be a deep option for teams looking to add upper-level relief help through a minor league deal that comes with an invitation to spring training off the roster.
