To Dan Ambrose: Jose Ramirez will take on Richard Commey on March 25 at the SaveMart Center in Fresno, Calif.Ramirez (27-1, 17 KOs) just missed a guaranteed title shot against WBC light welterweight champion Regis program To fight Commey, 35 (30-4-1, 27 KOs).
Fighting Comey instead of Prograce won’t help Ramirez’s popularity, but it will at least save him from another loss. I wasn’t confident that I could beat Progresschasing an easier target on Commey is the ticket to keeping his career alive, and money is pouring in for headliner spots on ESPN.
According to Mike Coppinger, former WBC/WBO 140-pound champion Ramirez (27-1, 17 KOs) and former IBF 135-pound champion Comey have agreed a deal to fight in a light welterweight bout.
Ramirez, 30, turned down a fight with WBC champion Prograis because he was unhappy with the 65-35 split.
Ramirez has left the door open for a future fight with Prograis, but it looks like he’s eyeing a rematch with WBO 140-pound champion Taylor. He lost the Undisputed £140 Championship to Taylor in May 2021 in a 12-round majority decision.
Since that battle Ramirez’s career is slowinghe fought and beaten only once Jose Pedraza By a 12-round unanimous decision in Fresno last March.
“Jose Ramirez and Richard Commey have reached an agreement for their March 25 bout in Fresno, Calif.,” Mike Coppinger told ESPN. held at the center.
“Comy got the mandate after Ramirez gave up his title fight with Regis Prograis due to a split wallet.”
If Ramirez later chooses to reconsider negotiations, fighting Comey won’t help him get a better split with Prograis.
It would have been better if Ramirez chose to fight a higher ranked player than Comey.
Ramirez should have picked at least one of these fighters in the March 25 contest to avoid being seen as an evasive cherry-picker:
- Jose Zepeda
- Arnold Barbosa
- Teofimo Lopez
- Sabriel Mathias
- Gary Antuan Russell
- Thunder Martin
- Steve Spark
