Artur Beterbiev didn’t seem to care much about home-court advantage.
The Russian WBC, WBO and IBF light heavyweight champions will face contender Anthony Yard on January 28 in Yard’s hometown of Wembley Arena in London.
When asked in a recent interview if he was even slightly worried about fighting in Yard’s own backyard, Beterbiev objected.
“I’m not focused on the city,” Beterbiev told BT Sport. “I am not like this man [who is obsessed with location]: London, New York, Moscow, I don’t focus on cities. I am more focused on my opponent. ”
Not to mention the fact that Beterbiev is well-travelled and used to defending his belt in places with no visible electoral districts, and his adopted home is Montreal. In fact, the Russian has fought most of his professional matches in Quebec, Canada. Beterbiev’s final fight, Long Island’s Joe Smith Jr.’s second round stoppage, took place at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York City. In this fight, Beterbiev won his 175-pound title for the third time. In 2019, Beterbiev traveled to Philadelphia to unify the IBF and WBC titles against Oleksandr Gvozdik.
Beterbiev, who knocked out all 18 of his opponents, said he wasn’t thinking about stopping against Yard, a famous puncher himself.
“I never thought of a knockout,” Beterbiev said. “I’m thinking [being a] To show good boxers, good boxing. ”
“The box is my job,” added Beterbiev. “When someone likes the way I work, I am twice as happy as he is.”
Beterbiev-Yarde was originally scheduled for late last year, but the match was postponed after Beterbiev underwent surgery for a pre-existing injury.
This will be Yarde’s second title shot. He failed to win his 175-pound WBO title against Sergei Kovalev in his 2019, stopping in the 11th round.
