The program is gaining national attention as Providence College leaps to the top of the Big East men’s basketball rankings.

The monks checked in at number 19 in the latest Associated Press poll released Monday. This is Providence’s Top 25 debut for 2022-23. The Ed Cooley-led team spent his 13 weeks in the elite in his 2021-22 campaign of a dream.

Wednesday’s 73-61 home victory over No. 4 Connecticut and Saturday’s 83-80 home grind past St. John’s strengthened the Monks’ status update. They robbed him of a 24-3 start overall before he peaked in eighth place last February and eventually won his first conference title in program history.

Providence are 14-3 overall, and are on a nine-game winning streak. The Monks are 41-9 in his last 50 games against league opponents, and in his last 25 games he’s 21-4. They reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in 25 years for him last March and were stopped by a loss to eventual national champion Kansas, which saw him finish 13th in the polls.
