HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Local legislators plan to introduce legislation to create a sportsbook and cardroom on Oahu.

This bill is the latest effort to legalize some forms of gambling in Hawaii.

The measure, introduced by state legislator John Mizuno, aims to open Oahu’s first independent sportsbook and cardroom with a 10-year license.

He said Hawaiians spend $1 billion in Las Vegas each year.

HNN was unable to verify that statistic, but Mizuno explains that our state’s economy should benefit from all the gambling.

“If the crime is gambling related, why are the games legal in 48 states and why are so many Hawaiians going to Las Vegas, many of them making multiple trips? I Most of the people I know who enjoy traveling to Las Vegas are Kupuna and not criminals, and we feel it’s important to discuss options for keeping local money in the local economy.” said Mizuno.

According to the proposed law, customers will be allowed into the sportsbook and card room only after registering with the facility and paying the daily admission fee.

A press conference to discuss the bill is scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. at the State Capitol.
