NFL Rumors: 49ers Requested by Broncos to Interview Demeko Lyons

Coordinator Demeko Lyons, who has led the vaunted 49ers defense over the last two seasons, is one of the top names to land a head coaching job this offseason.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday, citing sources, that the Denver Broncos have asked the 49ers permission to interview the Ryans about the open head coaching job.

The Ryans aren’t expected to pursue a job with the Texans after the team fired Robbie Smith on Sunday after one season, according to Aaron Wilson of Houston’s KPRC.

Lyons has spent the past six seasons on the staff of Coach Kyle Shanahan, initially in a defensive quality control role in 2017 and as an inside linebacker coach in 2018-20. When the New York Jets hired Robert Salah as head coach last season, he was promoted to defensive coordinator.

Ryans was a candidate to fill a vacancy with the Minnesota Vikings last season, but declined to be interviewed for a second time.

The 49ers defense ended the 2022 NFL season ranked first in total yards gained (300.6) and points allowed (16.3) per game. San Francisco also finished the season as the second best rushing defense in the league (77.7 yards per game).

Ryans isn’t the only coach with ties to the 49ers who has been named a candidate for the Broncos job.

Former 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh will reportedly be interviewed for the role earlier this week. Harbaugh hasn’t coached in the NFL since parting ways with San Francisco in 2014.

The Broncos fired coach Nathaniel Hackett on December 26 after a dismal 4-11 start to the season. ‘s Russell Wilson’s poor performance leaves him with many questions to answer. He is still under contract for the next six seasons.

There will be a lot of competition for Broncos jobs.

Denver also reportedly asked permission to interview Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and Sean Payton.
