Men’s basketball: Lobos loses second season

On Saturday, January 7, the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team lost to the University of Nevada Las Vegas Running Levels at The Pit in front of a sold-out crowd. The Lobos are 14-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Lobos lost two games in a row after winning 14–0 by the start of the season.

UNLV got off to a hot start from the 3-point line, completing 8 of 22 attempts. They also made 18 of their 24 free throws. It was UNLV’s first conference win of the season.

Morris Udeze led his team in points and rebounded on 22 and 13. He also made three thefts. Jamal Mashburn Jr. has scored 19 points in this game. Jaelen House he finished with 12 points and 4 steals.

Elijah Harkless, UNLV’s standout player, scored 25 points, made 8 of his 16 shots and made all 7 free throws.

Mashburn opened the game with a mid-range jump shot, House followed with a steal and an easy layup. Harkless was fouled and made both free throws. At the first media timeout, UNM led 10-4 with 15:29 left in the first half.

UNLV’s Jordan McCabe cut into Lobo’s lead with a 3-pointer in the timeout, but House made back-to-back steals to regain the lead. House then made his 3-pointer and the Lobos he put up 10. With 7:56 remaining, Lobos won him 26-14.

Donovan Dent then hit an impressive shot, driving down the lane until the shot clock ran out. Javonte Johnson dunked in haste via a pass from Dent to force UNLV into a timeout. This resulted in a turnover for Lobo, and UNLV scored his 3-pointer to cut the lead to his 5.

UNM was up just 2 when Mashburn and House came back into the game with subs to finish the half. Luis Rodriguez hit his 3-pointer to beat UNLV to his 39-38. Lobos finished the half with House scoring a layup and Udeze scoring a dunk from a turnover. Lobos he went into the second half at 43-38.

Lobo’s guard was plagued with fouls in the first half. House, Mashburn and Dent all had two fouls each. This gave KJ Jenkins an extra minute after missing the previous match.

The second half started with three consecutive Lobo turnovers, with UNLV leading 47-43 on a 9-0 run. UNM were forced to call timeout to stop the Runnin’ Rebels’ momentum. Mashburn created a midrange jump shot to bring Lobo within 1 of him, but more fouling from the guard allowed UNLV to take the lead on the free throws.

Jenkins then hit a 3-pointer, but the Lobos still led 63-58. Udeze dunked and Mashburn laid up. Johnson scored a three-pointer to bring the Lobos within two with 5:18 remaining.

Lobos continued to score, but also continued to foul. Rodriguez fouled on a layup and freed his throw to put UNLV up 78-71. UNM got back into the game with a free throw and drive lane. Mashburn drove down the lane and he took UNM down by four. UNM fouled immediately, but Rodriguez scored both free throws to seal the match. UNM he lost 84-77.

Lobos will face Oral Roberts University at The Pit next Monday. January 9.
